50 Tough Schoolmaster Mar '60 (NEW)

Royale Studio - Tough Schoolmaster

This set contains many familiar spanking images and the title suggests little more by way of a plot. It features a group of young men, dressed as soccer players, who are being taught calculus (!) by an improbable, leather and uniform clad teacher who clearly has strong traditional views and a taste for harsh discipline. This mindset was not uncommon in British institutions at the time, but the behaviour in Royale's story does not go unchallenged. The set features some outdated, schoolboy comic ingredients, such as the dunce's cap in the image above.

The set title first appears in a Royale ad in March 1960 in Man Alive 9, but there was no linked image, so my assignment of that title to this particular set is guesswork in truth. This date was too late for the 1960 Royale catalogue, so we don't have any information from that source and my study of the beefcake magazines of that period has not uncovered any images from the set either. Those the Archive has come either from the British Photographers collection (Source 1), the now defunct Tim in Vermont website (Source 9) or in one or two cases from internet sources, such as sale rooms which I hadn't documented when I made a copy. There are 11 in all (plus a couple of vaguely connected 'extras'), however, the evidence suggests this was a big set, probably 30+ images.

There is a biggish cast of four with Ron Fenn playing the teacher. One of the students looks a lot like Tibor Urgay, but I haven't been able to identify the other two yet.
