Fred Collins, 'Footballer' by Royale (ca.1958) |
Fred Collins was an under-rated stalwart of the Royale experiment, making numerous appearances in the early years, when his confidence in front of the camera seems to have earned him a senior role amongst his peers. He appears in 8 of the 26 photo-sets listed in the (slimmed-down) 1958 section of Royale's Catalogue. That's a validation of Royale's statement in the description of set FRC-1 that he was their most popular model. He continued to appear in fresh photo sets well into the Hussar era. His appeal was also recognised by other leading British physique photographers. He posed for Scott, Pete Dobing and Vic White. Possibly John Graham too.
In the early footballing image shown above, his slightly boyish appearance, styled hair and low-key physique are overshadowed by the in-your-face erotic display afforded by those oh-so-tight shorts. However in Unapproved School (1959), for example, his lean muscles, thick thighs and sheer acting ability would outshine the natural beauty and powerful physique of David Reid.
His CV is formidable:-
