The 'Unapproved School' saga, which chronicles the military punishment of a soldier and a sailor and their attempts to resist and escape, is one of Royale's crowning achievements. It has a relatively complex plotline and (like Navy Romeo) it's shot partly in the studio and partly on location (both indoors and out). That's a technical challenge in any era. First listed in July 1959, it consists of 48 photos (of which the mitchmen Royale Archive presently has 40) and these include a number of the best-known, best loved, Royale images, like that shown above which is taken from Royale's Catalogue thumbnail sheet (Key List 8).
The models (left to right above) were Tom Harding, David Reid, Paul Clark and Fred Collins
The 'Unapproved' tag is a play on the name of 1950's, UK institutions for young offenders and neglected children known as 'Approved Schools'. They were purely civilian in nature but sometimes operated in a military manner with strict discipline. They have long since been closed down.
